Superhero Chess

This weekend saw Comic Con come to Glasgow in the form of Scotland Comic Con, and it was another resounding success with thousands of comic book fans flocking to the SECC. At Boyd Digital we also got into the superhero spirit by hosting our very own Superhero Chess competition at Geek Retreat on Union Street in celebration of Comic Con.

With an amazing prize courtesy of Eaglemoss My Collection Shop of a complete DC Batman Chess Set with accompanying magazines, competition was fierce at the round robin chess contest. Chess players wishing to participate also had to be dressed as their favourite superhero, adding that Comic Con touch to the proceedings.IMG_4179 (1)

From Spiderman to Thor to Supermen, Glasgow chess players of all ages did themselves proud.  Set amongst the background of the comic book haven that is Geek Retreat, the round robin competition tested the players to the utmost in the timed bouts.

The ultimate winner who carried off the grand prize was Austin Powers, otherwise known as Alan from Paisley, who entered alongside his son Thor also known as David.superh1

Runner up Janis (dressed as Superman) had this to say: “It was a great atmosphere, even though it was a competitive event I had loads of fun, especially because of everyone dressed up in crazy superhero costumes”. It wasn’t a total loss for him though as he won a Katana chess piece from the DC Batman collection.

With Comic Cons worldwide becoming more and more mainstream, Scotland’s Comic Con is sure to follow suit and become bigger and better with each passing year. Who knows – in a few years perhaps there will be more than one Comic Con in Scotland! Giving us all at Boyd Digital even more chances to dress up for various events!
